Urban Informatics for Smart City: A Case Study of Amsterdam

Abstract

Using Amsterdam as a case study, this review discusses urban informatics applications in smart cities. Amsterdam is a European city renowned for its numerous canals and historic structures. With the growth of the urban population and economy, some urban diseases such as environmental pollution and energy scarcity have gradually manifested in Amsterdam. Moreover, global sea-level rise is threatening Amsterdam every year. To this end, Amsterdam's citizens and organizations voluntarily established the Amsterdam Smart City Platform (ASCP), a venue for developing and implementing numerous urban informatics measures. This article examined several urban informatics technologies and methods in Amsterdam, including blue-green RESILIO roofs, S-Park, BuurtHub, Noise Monitoring System and Schoonschip. Then, this article synthesizes urban informatics strategies that have been tested in other cities and proposes their implementation in Amsterdam, including flood hazard mapper and shared solar energy system. Amsterdam is a highly distinctive smart city at the cutting edge of global innovation. The application experience of urban informatics, in this case, is deserving of study and reference.
