As the most influential media of information dissemination, news reports often covertly present social ideologies to their audiences in the form of language. This paper uses Newsbank and Lexis Nexis as the source of information and builds a corpus selecting 20 news reports of traditional Chinese medicine in The Times, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The New York Times and Port Washington News over a three-year period from January 2019 to July 2022, using critical discourse analysis as the research method. Based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional model, analysis was conducted in terms of text, discourse practice and sociocultural practice respectively. At the level of text analysis, vocabulary, transitivity and modality are focused in this study. It has been found that the overall reports are objective from the perspective of evaluation, but judging from vocabulary choices, there are more negative reports than positive ones. Negative reports exaggerate and distort the truth, misleading the audience while positive reports tend to focus on acupuncture. In terms of discourse practice, the reports are found to construct an image of TCM that was not entirely objective, from the perspective of news source and reported mode. In terms of sociocultural practice, the ideological and international situation in which the discourse was created is analyzed. It is concluded that values, institutional dif-ferences and changes in the current international situation are the underlying causes of the image construction of TCM in media.
