The rise of a popular culture in a country typically reflects the living conditions and desires of its youth population. The popularity of rock and roll in post-World War II America reflected youth’s desire for love and freedom from the oppression of adult authority. Disco music, which was popular in the 1970s, emerged as a way to escape the rising social and economic issues, such as war, gang violence and unemployment. Hip-hop, which attained widespread popularity in the 1980s and ’90s, arose as a form of expression of urban Black and Latino youth in the marginalized communities. The widespread consumption of video games since the 2000s fostered a sense of belonging through connecting over shared interests or forming bonds within a team, especially for teens who feel anxious socializing in-person. In recent decades, there has been rising popularity of K-pop—a transcultural movement—among American youths. It is interesting to reflect on what changes this movement may signify for the desires and aspirations of today’s youth.
